Why Buy a DAB Digital Radio?
"[It's] the perfect addition to any
home or office.
It delivers digital sound without the hiss,
crackle and fade of AM/FM broadcasts."
Welcome to your brief guide to the very latest in
must-own home-electronics, the digital radio, with
answers to questions like this:
So, what is DAB Digital Radio?
Well, DAB digital radio is not satellite nor Internet radio.
DAB digital radio is a new way of broadcasting radio via a
network of terrestrial transmitters. It provides listeners
with more choice, better sound quality...

What are the BENEFITS of DAB?
- Simple reception - CD quality broadcast reception,
via a small atenna
- Simple program reception - just choose your station by
name, rather than an (easy-to-forget) number
- Continuous coverage - listen to national stations without
having to retune on long journeys
- There are a number of new digital only stations
now available which you cannot receive via your analogue
(AM/FM) radio.
(The above benefits summarised from practical DAB magazine,
free with November 2004 issue of Radio
Active.)
Where can you buy dab digital radios?
Last Christmas, it was almost impossible to buy a digital
radio online or off-line. But now it's possible to buy digital
radios at stores like Comet,
QED, Empire Direct and - surprisingly? - even Amazon
UK
(And now you can buy a dab digital
adaptor from Dixons, as well as DAB digital radios.)
And now for some basic information about digital radios...
Digital radio coverage
At the moment, 85% of Britain can currently receive and enjoy
DAB radio stations. As long as you are within a coverage area,
you can expect to enjoy clean, crisp digital radio. [More...]
More stations
There are currently around 80 conventional FM and DAB-exclusive
radio stations transmitting over DAB, with more popping up
all the time as new transmitters are switched on.[Check
coverage here!]
Subscription charges
There are none--DAB radio stations are free, all you pay
for is the hardware to receive DAB transmissions.
DAB hardware
There are four types of DAB hardware categories to choose
from: portable, in-home, in-car and PC. The most popular,
and cheapest, of these are portable DAB radios--many of which
look like classic portable radios of yesteryear, such as the
very popular Pure Evoke-1 from Pure Digital.
